Voices from Haiti

 Dear Colleagues,

I spent a week in rural Northern Haiti this past April. I brought back notecards made by Haitian artist, Ronel Louis-Jean. Ronel is a young man who is deaf and does not speak. His only source of income comes from his artwork. I am selling these cards for him. 100% of the profits go to Ronel.
The cards come with a 4 by 6 envelope, are wrapped in cellophane, and have a label on the back about the artist. Each card is $3.00 or you may purchase 6 for $15. There will be a charge for mailing unless you pick them up.

If you would like to order some cards, just look at the scanned cards in the attachment and email me the number of cards you would like along with your postal address and name. You can identify the cards by color and the person on the card. (ex. man or woman) The cards are blank inside and can also be used for a speaking prompt or framed. Thank you for your support of this young Haitian artist. The check may be made payable to Georgette Schmidt and mailed to 309 Scottholm Blvd., Syracuse, NY 13224. Please include $3.00 for postage and handling. I will mail you the cards as soon as I have your order.

Sincerely,

Georgette Schmidt

AFS IMMERSION DAY A ROARING SUCCESS!

The excitement was palpable…the energy was incredible…and the day was gorgeous.  On April 10, 50 members and guests convened in a beautiful location in south Sarasota from 10-4 to share in an AFS immersion experience of French and North African cultures.  Students experienced four sessions of language immersion—art, Francophone language and culture, phonetics, and nature walk—under the guidance of AFS’s talented teachers, Eva Frank, Marie-Christine Rouffiac, Sylvia Sabbah, and our Francophone volunteers, Isaac & Gisèle Azerad and Mireille Gloor.  The event started with a petit déjeuner of café, thé et crêpes lathered in a specially prepared mixture of butter & honey, then on to the first language session.

Separated into four levels of French proficiency, the students laughed, spoke, sang, and chatted—en français bien sûr—before rotating by groups into the second session.  Ammal Mostofa of the Morocco Restaurant prepared an exotic lunch, served under a specially erected Moroccan tent, where the ground was covered with richly woven Moroccan rugs. Guests then enjoyed their meal dans le jardin on this crisp and beautiful spring day, while a lovely belly dancer entertained the crowd with her graceful and sensuous moves.  The afternoon sessions began once again and the students rotated back into their classes, ending with a group photo in front of the tent.

The hosts of this exceptional event were Sylvia Gillotte and Sidney Ettedgui, who not only opened their home to the AFS on this special occasion but also helped organize it, print the advertising materials, prepare some of the dishes, and invent some of the classroom materials.  Sidney displayed his talents at lunch with his earthenware tagines, couscousière, and explanations of Moroccan foods and argan oil. We are deeply grateful to them, as we are to our teachers and volunteers, who generously donated their time for the general pleasure of others.

The smiles on everyone’s faces throughout the day needed no translations.  As Vera Newman-Wood, whom some of you may know from the Selby Library said, “My poor French, after decades of disuse, got a jump-start today with this fabulous experience.  The whole event was delightful and the food delicious.”  Gloria Grenier added, “I can't think of any aspect of the day that I did not enjoy. The teachers were all excellent, the food excellent, and the belly dancer…was the envy of all!!!!!!”

Chapeau to the AFS board, especially Marion Kuster, Gil Arguelles, and Barbara Frey, and to our hosts and the team of instructors who worked extremely hard to make this event a success.  The board has been besieged with requests for a repeat performance next year, so the planning process has  already started.   On vous tiendra au courant!

 Quelle journée!
